It&#8217;s a simple yet flavorful enriched dough that&#8217;s made with butter, whole milk, an egg, and a little sugar.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The dough is rolled into small balls and coated with cinnamon sugar before being piled into a bundt pan, coated in caramel sauce, and baked.<\/p>\n<p>Making monkey bread from scratch requires a little extra prep work, but this is an easy recipe to follow. Everything is homemade, but the ingredients list is short and sweet.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a brief overview of some of the star ingredients:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Warm Water:&nbsp;<\/strong>Heat the water to about 110\u00baF but no further or else you may accidentally kill the yeast.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Yeast:&nbsp;<\/strong>I prefer to use active dry yeast for this recipe because it&#8217;s what I keep on hand.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Whole Milk:&nbsp;<\/strong>Adds moisture and flavor to the dough. I recommend using whole milk, but 2%, 1%, or skim milk would be fine.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Salt:<\/strong>&nbsp;There&#8217;s 1 and 1\/4 teaspoons of salt in the dough. This involves combining the warm water, yeast, and a little sugar to check that the yeast is still active (i.e. that your bread dough will actually rise).&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If your yeast is not foamy after about 10 minutes, you will need to discard it and start again. This could either mean that the yeast is expired or your water is too warm.<\/p>\n<p>I recommend testing your water temperature with an instant read thermometer. Stir it often so that it doesn&#8217;t burn.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pour the scalded milk over the butter, sugar, and salt:<\/strong> Stir until everything is combined and the butter has completely melted.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cool slightly:&nbsp;<\/strong>Let the mixture cool to about 110\u00b0F. You don&#8217;t want the mixture to be too hot when you add the yeast later on.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stir in two cups of flour:&nbsp;<\/strong>Once the milk mixture has cooled down, mix in two cups of flour. You will know the dough is ready when it&#8217;s smooth, elastic, and springs back when you lightly press it with your finger.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Let the dough rise:&nbsp;<\/strong>Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a clean, greased bowl. Cover it and set aside to rise for about one hour.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"baking-tips\"><em><strong>Tip:<\/strong> I like to use a heating pad to let my dough rise! Set aside and allow to cool until it's warm and no longer hot (about 110\u00b0F or 43\u00b0C).<\/div><\/li><li id=\"wprm-recipe-26081-step-0-4\" class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction\" style=\"list-style-type: decimal;\"><div class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction-text\" style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\">Once the scalded milk mixture has cooled, mix in 2 cups (250 grams) of flour by hand or using the dough hook attachment on a stand mixer. Add the yeast mixture and mix until well combined, then mix in the egg.<\/div><\/li><li id=\"wprm-recipe-26081-step-0-5\" class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction\" style=\"list-style-type: decimal;\"><div class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction-text\" style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\"><span style=\"display: block;\">Mix in 2 more cups (250 grams) of flour until fully combined, then mix in 1 to 2 tablespoons of flour at a time until the dough is easy to handle. Knead the dough by hand on a lightly floured surface or using the dough hook on a stand mixer on low speed for 5 to 10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic, adding a little extra flour if needed.<\/span><\/div><\/li><li id=\"wprm-recipe-26081-step-0-6\" class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction\" style=\"list-style-type: decimal;\"><div class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction-text\" style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\">Once the dough is kneaded, form it into a ball and place it into a lightly greased bowl. Cover and allow to rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.<\/div><\/li><li id=\"wprm-recipe-26081-step-0-7\" class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction\" style=\"list-style-type: decimal;\"><div class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction-text\" style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\"><span style=\"display: block;\"><strong>To make the cinnamon sugar coating:<\/strong> Melt the stick of butter in a microwave safe bowl in the microwave or in a small pot over medium-low heat. Place each coated ball into the bundt pan during this process.<\/div><\/li><li id=\"wprm-recipe-26081-step-0-12\" class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction\" style=\"list-style-type: decimal;\"><div class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction-text\" style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\">Cover the pan with a damp towel or plastic wrap and allow to rise for another 30 minutes.<\/div><\/li><li id=\"wprm-recipe-26081-step-0-13\" class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction\" style=\"list-style-type: decimal;\"><div class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction-text\" style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\">Preheat the oven to 350\u00b0F (180\u00b0C) while the dough is rising.<\/div><\/li><li id=\"wprm-recipe-26081-step-0-14\" class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction\" style=\"list-style-type: decimal;\"><div class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction-text\" style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\"><span style=\"display: block;\"><strong>To make the caramel sauce:<\/strong> Combine the sliced stick of butter and brown sugar in a small saucepan. Place over medium heat, stirring often until the mixture comes to a boil.<\/span><\/div><\/li><li id=\"wprm-recipe-26081-step-0-15\" class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction\" style=\"list-style-type: decimal;\"><div class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction-text\" style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\"><span style=\"display: block;\">Once the mixture is boiling, remove it from the heat and pour it all over the top of the monkey bread.<\/span><\/div><\/li><li id=\"wprm-recipe-26081-step-0-16\" class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction\" style=\"list-style-type: decimal;\"><div class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction-text\" style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\">Bake in the center rack of the oven for 30 to 45 minutes. Cover loosely or tent with aluminum foil if the dough starts to brown too much. Place a tray underneath (on the bottom oven rack) lined with parchment paper to catch any spills since the sugar can bubble over.<\/div><\/li><li id=\"wprm-recipe-26081-step-0-17\" class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction\" style=\"list-style-type: decimal;\"><div class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction-text\" style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\">Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 5 to 10 minutes. Use a butter knife to loosen any stuck parts of the monkey bread from around the edges of the pan. Then, carefully flip the pan onto a serving plate. If needed, use something heavy to bang the pan to help loosen the monkey bread. Shimy the pan to see if the monkey bread starts to release and repeat with tapping the pan until it\u2019s easy to lift up.<\/div><\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wprm-recipe-notes-container wprm-block-text-normal\"><h3 class=\"wprm-recipe-header wprm-recipe-notes-header wprm-block-text-uppercase wprm-align-left wprm-header-decoration-line\" style=\"\">Notes<div class=\"wprm-decoration-line\" style=\"border-color: #3e4146\"><\/div><\/h3><div class=\"wprm-recipe-notes\"><span style=\"display: block;\"><strong>Storage Instructions:\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monkey bread is best served the day it's baked.
